Confirm names, figures, dates and direct quotes. Make it clear what is known, what is alleged and what still needs verification.
Protect people
Minimise harm. Be especially careful with minors, people in crisis and sources who may face retaliation after publication.
Be transparent
Declare conflicts, never pay for access to a story, and tell editors early if a source has a personal connection to you.
File a complete story
Give the editor a precise headline, location, sources, supporting links and the most useful image you can legally use.
